Types of Virtual Assistants

Are there different types of virtual assistants, is a question we get asked pretty often. I guess on the surface the answer is yes, but that’s largely because virtual assistants do different things for different companies and roles. But in the end a virtual assistant is a person that does the same job an in-house person would do, but you only pay for the time they are working AND they don’t create any overhead expenses.

When we say we have different types of virtual assistants, that would largely mean they excel in different areas. We really enjoy chatting with clients about how a virtual assistant would save the most money and create the most value, and at that time figure which VAs have the perfect set of skills.

We have virtual assistants working for authors, insurance agencies, as bookkeepers, in mortgage offices, in therapy offices, tattoo parlors, as fractional EAs, some for the visually impaired, and a host of others.

From a job function standpoint, however, you could actually use different types of virtual assistants to fill the different parts of the company, for instance:

  • Administrative Virtual Assistants are human virtual assistants who handle administrative tasks remotely. They often manage email, calendars, data entry, billing and travel.

  • Customer Support Virtual Assistants assist with customer service inquiries, answering phones, processing orders, managing appointments, and sometimes product returns.

  • E-Commerce Virtual Assistants specialize in managing online stores and customer transactions, product listings, order management, customer queries. They might manage the relationships with Etsy, Amazon, Shopify, Paypal . . .

  • Social Media Virtual Assistants focus on managing social media accounts. You’ll find them doing content creation, post scheduling, tracking, reports, and trends.

  • Marketing Virtual Assistants help with digital marketing strategies like SEO, email campaigns, ad management. They might also do graphic creation, flyers, and website design.

  • Financial Virtual Assistants assist with bookkeeping, invoicing, expense tracking, payroll and financial tasks.

  • Personal Virtual Assistants help individuals with everyday personal tasks like travel booking, gift shopping, and event planning.
